Lisa Klug really hits the right tone with this book. My ex-husband picked bought it for me year ago, and its been a valued addition to my Jewish library. As a convert, I already think being Jewish is pretty cool. But for those who aren't as sure, this is the book for you.
Cool Jew is the perfect gift to bring for your Seder hostess. The book reminds us that being cool and being Jewish are not contradictory - in fact - it is way cool to be Jewish.
Should they match your outfit or is one kipah enough for all seasons.The humor ranges from subtle to outrageous and sometimes offensive yet in good fun. Klug, Lisa Alcalay. It manages to look at all things Jewish and tells us how to deal with them in the modern world. Do you know about Jewish head coverings and when to wear what. There is information about superstition. The book includes essays, photographs, lists, instruction guides, and illustrations that show us how to celebrate and take pride in being Jewish and it is irreverent and full of love at the same time.
More than the humor is the fact that the book is an affirmation that one can be cool and a Jew at the same time. (It is no more offensive say, than "Heeb" Magazine). It is hip and contemporary and full of valuable information.At first I thought I was reading a satire on Judaism but as I continued reading that buried in the humor and parody is a lot of educational and very useful information. Jewish symbols are explained and Jewish food is dissected and it is explained which food goes with each holiday (which are also explained--kind of like "Everything You Wanted to Know About Judaism but Were Afraid to Ask"). I don't think that many realize that being Jewish can be a hip lifestyle.
Modern "Heebonics", the Ten Commandments, Jewish animals, and what have you.
Ms. Cool Jew: The Ultimate Guide for Every Member of the TribeI bought the book for myself as a pre-Hanukkah present. Klug's style is light and fun, but presents lots of info in a realtively small space. It is a great read and worth twice what you charge for it. (OK, maybe only 50% more). (And yes, it was Eva not Zsa Zsa, who was in Green Acres - but since they were sisters, what difference does it make. And Werner Klemperer's father was Jewish, so by moden Jewish paternal lineage, he was definitely a M.O.T).
This book encapsulates everything I love about being Jewish in astonishing and side-splittingly hilarious detail. No other book of Jewish humor is as hip, contemporary or exhaustive. I am SERIOUSLY buying this for everyone on my hanukkah list -- it would also make an ideal (although certainly irreverent) bar and bat mitzvah gift. I LOVE THIS BOOK.
